“When I began to paint this series of canvases featuring a pair of stones, I did so because I did not know what to paint, nor what could be painted: such a miserable beginning that it could not lead to any_thing significant. However, as time passed, I observed that they did not betray any of the destructive motivations behind them. The images began to teach me that generalizing a personal dilemma solves it. The discretion of a pair of stones in an uncertain landscape gives the paintings the ability to mediate through a positive illusion, because they are equivalent to indifference, detachment and the absence of opinion. That is, for states of being and situations that affect us and for which we would like to find a visual expression.” Antonio Ortega
Antonio Ortega (*1968 in Sant Celoni, ESP) ist Professor an der Escola Massana - UAB und ist Mitglied des Grup d'Estudi. Antonio Ortega begann seine künstlerische Tätigkeit im Bereich der Installation und der erweiterten Performance. Zu seinen Projekten zählen El Arte Doméstico (La Capella, Barcelona, 1999), Registro de Bondad (Sala Montcada, Barcelona, 2000), Antonio Ortega and The Contestants (The Showroom, London, 2002), Opfer sind wir alle (Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach, 2003) oder Faith and enthusiasm (Espai 13, Barcelona, 2004). Beispiele seiner jüngeren künstlerischen Tätigkeit im Bereich der Installation sind der Sockel im zweiten Stock des Macba Barcelona Attempt to gloss over the concept of demagoguery, 2014; sein Ozongenerator, der einen Raum von 1047 m3 d'air purifié schuf, 2017 für die Biennale von Louvain la Neuve, oder die permanente Installation in der Kuppel des MNAC mit dem Titel Mà parallamps, 2022.
Seit 2007 konzentriert sich Ortega auf das Schreiben und erkundet zunächst die performative Konferenz und das experimentelle Theater in I hope Alice Cooper does not become a vegetarian (SMOCA, Phoenix AZ, 2007) oder The Best Ten Tips Ever, In Alphabetical Order (Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerpen, 2009). Bielbooks veröffentlichte sein erstes Buch Demagogy and propaganda in art according to Antonio Ortega (2013). Er kuratierte die Ausstellung Self-Organization (Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, 2017), die von einem gleichnamigen Essay begleitet wurde. Kürzlich präsentierte er The Lesson of Johanna Van Gogh (2021), veröffentlicht von Como Ediciones und konzentriert sich auf die Verteidigung einer amateurhaften Perspektive im Kunstsystem. Ab 2022 besteht sein Werk aus einer Rückkehr zur Malerei.
