Erwin Bohatsch

  GALERIE THOMAN
 05.02. - 25.03.2006

english version:

We will present recent and new works attesting to the consistent development of his oeuvre inspired by a consistent process of reduction and concentration.

Erwin Bohatsch`s pictures emerge slowly, step by well considered step. His paintings - some of which appear nearly monochrome at first sight - are composed of numerous, varnish-like layers of oil paint and synthetic resin, the texture and the colourfulness of the canvas remaining partially visible beneath. The abstract figurations to be made out, meanwhile, are not painted in the classical sense. Instead Bohatsch leaves the forms to develop by themselves and to successively emerge through the overlapping and meeting of different layers of paint. Many of these colour forms come about as the artist pours clear, slightly diluted or undiluted acrylic over the canvas, spread on the floor or tilted, and later peels it back in parts with a rubber scraper. The planes thus covered with acrylic seal the canvas, which means that in these places, when veils of colour are consequently spread across the canvas, it will reject paint. Lighter colours may thus appear to cover the uppermost image plane. In reality, though, it is deeper layers we are looking at. Erwin Bohatsch, who in his pictures often reduces gently nuanced contrasts of colour or of light and dark down to the merest inkling of a presence, makes use, as a binder, of both dull acrylic and luminous oil which either reflect or absorb the light and thus make the image surface quick to respond to how the light falls.

In the 1980s Erwin Bohatsch was one of the most prominent painters of the Neue Wilde movement in Austria that, as a counter movement to the conceptual art of the 1970s, reinvented painting as an aesthetic phenomenon. Reflecting on the first modernity his subjects were characterised by his interest in ethnographic motifs. Since the 1990s Bohatsch's portraits have turned increasingly more abstract almost to the point of appearing nearly monochrome panels. Bohatsch turns his concentrated attention to the interaction of light and colour, the determining aspects of painting.
